From June 12 to September 19, 2027, the 16th edition of documenta (D16) will take place in Kassel under the Artistic Direction of Naomi Beckwith. D16 will be a celebration of artistic practices, collective learning, performances, music and improvisation creating new bonds and shared experiences.
In a collaborative process, the design studios Beautiful Baby Limited, Data Orbit and Wiegand von Hartmann jointly developed the visual language of D16 based on the interplay of three typefaces.
For the website, Wiegand von Hartmann developed a free visualisation of scores that slowly dissolve into an atmospheric background. Scores are as plans, musical notations, maps, or systems. They reflect different forms of thinking, organising, and composing. They also connect closely to the research, the design process, and the conceptual framework of D16.
As the activation progresses, this layer will gradually include more references to D16 artists. Multiple scores overlap on the screen and respond subtly to sound.
